INVESTING IN DIAMONDS

We offer deep and candid insight into the diamond market.

INVESTING IN DIAMONDS AND NATURAL FANCY COLOR DIAMONDS

The Rarest and Most Valuable Gems in Existence

ARE LOOSE DIAMONDS A GOOD INVESTMENT?

The real answer to that question depends on a variety of factors.

Here is the big question, how much do you know about diamonds?

ARE YOU INVESTING IN A COLORLESS DIAMOND, A YELLOW DIAMOND OR OTHER FANCY COLOR DIAMOND?

Colorless diamonds have real investment potential when they exceed a certain size and maintain a certain combination of qualities. Consumer size/grade colorless diamonds up to 5 carats are not viable investment vehicles for anyone other than professional diamond dealers.

Don't get sold on false promises, it's been tried and tested and ultimately it was a failure that resulted in a destabilization of the diamond market and a devaluation of the diamonds themselves. There is vitrually no chance that a private individual could ever hope to recover their investment much less turn a profit on consumer friendly colorless diamonds.

Fancy Color Diamonds are a much more attractive alternative when it comes to investment potential. Depending on the magnitude of the investment, yellow diamonds, pink diamonds and blue diamonds consistently appreciate with yellow diamonds being the slowest but steady performers that are both affordable and accessable to a wide range of potential buyers while natural blue and pink diamonds are so rare and expensive that they are accessable to only the top 1% of the financial elite and they continue to appreciate at astronomical rates, year after year.

IS THIS AN INVESTMENT DIAMOND?

What is the right combination of Shape, Size, Color, Clarity and Proportions that make for a good investment with price increase potential?

All diamond grading laboratories are NOT created equal, does the diamond have a full GIA diamond grading certificate or is the grading certificate even from an accredited laboratory? Is there a grading certificate from an independent laboratory? Which one? Are they all the same? Or is there a piece of paper from an "in-house" appraiser? What's the difference? The answer is like the difference between night and day.

1. Other elements abundant in the formative environment have been incorporated into the crystal structure.

2. Close physical proximity of other external environmental factors have caused changes to occur to the natural crystal structure.

UNDERSTANDING FANCY COLORED DIAMOND COLOR GRADE TERMINOLOGY

The color grading scale is broken up into nine distinct categories of saturation or intensity:

Faint                             Negligible color – (not investment grade)
Very Light                    Barely any color – (not investment grade)
Light                             Very delicate color - (not investment grade)
Fancy Light                  Delicate color - (not investment grade)
Fancy                           Obvious color - (Investment Potential)
Fancy Intense              Strong color - (Investment Potential)
Fancy Dark                  Dark tone strong color (not investment grade)
Fancy Deep                 Rich obvious color - (Investment Potential in certain colors)

Fancy Vivid                  Vibrant color - (Investment Potential)

COLOR COMBINATIONS

It is very common to find colored diamonds that exhibit a combination of related colors. Some, such as "Purplish-Pink" are highly sought after and desirable. Others, such as "Brownish Yellow" are not.

Understanding the big picture of the world of natural fancy colored diamonds is essential in evaluating the real investment potential of any color fancy colored diamond.

VALUATION CRITERIA

Natural Fancy Color diamonds are valuated based the combination of their rarity and desirability.

Rarity is evaluated based on the combination of carat weight, the primary color of the diamond, the saturation and purity of color and to a much lesser extent the Clarity.

Note: We are assuming the Clarity of the stone is within the range Flawless (FL) thru Very Slightly Included 1 (VS1) GIA. Lower clarity grades will impact the rarity and valuation of any colored diamond.

Desirability is more subjective but generally accepted guidelines based on both industry standards and consumer perception set the tone for evaluating the desirability of any given diamond.

COLOR AND RARITY

The different colors of natural fancy color diamonds appear with different frequency. From these desirable colors Yellow diamonds are the most common followed by Pink diamonds, Orange Diamonds and Green Diamonds, Purple Diamonds, Blue diamonds and finally the Red diamond. The rarity of any diamond will increase as the size of the stone increases and also as the color intensity increases.

CLARITY AND FANCY COLOR DIAMONDS

Clarity levels play a completely secondary and negligible role in the valuation of a fancy color diamond as long as the stone is graded for Clarity by GIA standards as being within the range of FL (Flawless) through VS1 (Very Slightly Included Level 1). Flawless (FL) and Internally Flawless (IF) graded diamonds may sell at a premium.

SHAPE AND COLOR

Natural fancy color diamonds appear in all the various shapes traditionally found in colorless diamonds. However, certain shapes lend themselves to the maximization of the saturation and even distribution of color in the crystal while maintaining high levels of Brilliance and Dispersion hence these shapes will be more commonly found.

The Radiant and Cushion cuts are the most prolific followed by other popular shapes like the Oval, Emerald, Asscher, Round Brilliant, and Pear.

These less frequent shapes, Round Brilliant, Emerald and Asscher specifically will often command a large premium over the standard Radiant and Cushion.
