Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds in every scientifically measurable way. They have the same carbon crystal structure, the same hardness (10 on the Mohs scale), the same refractive index (2.417), the same thermal conductivity, and the same optical dispersion as diamonds formed in the earth. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission confirmed in 2018 that a diamond is a diamond regardless of origin, removing the word 'natural' from the definition of diamond.

How are lab-grown diamonds made?

Lab-grown diamonds are created using two methods: Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) grows diamonds by depositing carbon atoms from a gas onto a seed crystal at 800–1,200°C. High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) subjects carbon to pressures exceeding 1.5 million PSI at temperatures above 1,400°C, replicating conditions deep in the earth. Both methods produce diamonds that are chemically and optically identical to mined diamonds.

How much do lab-grown diamonds cost compared to natural?

Lab-grown diamonds typically cost 80 to 95 percent less than comparable natural diamonds. A 1-carat lab-grown with G color, VS2 clarity, and Excellent cut might cost $800–$1,500 vs $4,000–$7,000 natural. Fancy colors like blue and pink can be 90–99% less than natural counterparts.

Can you tell the difference between lab-grown and natural diamonds?

No. They are visually identical and cannot be distinguished by the naked eye, a jeweler's loupe, or standard diamond testers. Only specialized laboratory equipment detecting trace element patterns and growth morphology can determine origin. This is why GIA and IGI clearly mark grading reports with the diamond's origin.

Do lab-grown diamonds hold their value?

Lab-grown diamonds should be understood as a consumable luxury rather than an investment. Their resale value is significantly below retail. Natural diamonds are more durable in resale but still carry a 30–50% retail-to-resale gap. The advantage of lab-grown is maximizing beauty and quality within your budget.

Are lab-grown diamonds graded the same as natural diamonds?

Yes. Lab-grown diamonds are graded by the same laboratories — GIA and IGI — using the same 4Cs: Carat, Color, Clarity, and Cut. The grading report states 'Laboratory Grown' as the origin. You receive the same quality verification as a natural diamond purchase.
